The hand you were dealt.

I saw this quote the other day, and it really got me thinking. “The key to success is playing the hand you were dealt like it was the hand you wanted.”

So many of us sit here and blame our circumstances for everything we perceive as wrong with our lives. There are hundreds of excuses we can use. We didn’t have much growing up. I’m too short. My ex cheated on me. I’m not smart or talented enough. I don’t deserve to be happy. I am never given opportunities. This town is too small. My teeth are too crooked. I break everything I touch. Everyone leaves me eventually. My brother’s girlfriend’s, cousin’s cat ate my neighbor’s hamster… while some of those things may be true, at the end of the day, they are still just excuses.

The world doesn’t owe us anything. We don’t have a right to the hand we believe we should have been dealt. We don’t inherently deserve to be born into the life we want. We all have to work for it. Rising above our circumstances, choices, and our pasts is a choice. It doesn’t come easily, it takes blood, sweat, tears, and a whole lot of determination.

Your past experiences and mistakes aren’t who you are. You aren’t a result of your circumstances. You are who you decide to be. What would our world be like if Mozart never started composing? What if DaVinci or Van Gogh never picked up a paint brush? Or if the Wright brothers had let someone talk them out of building airplanes? What if Bill Gates had let the fact that he was a college dropout stop him from starting Microsoft? What if Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Ben Carson, or any of the other brilliant minds and talented people had let their pasts or where they came from, stop them from becoming some of the most influential people of their times?

It’s time to stop playing the victim card and realize we are responsible for how we play the hands we are given. We have no control over where we start in life, or what happens to us, but we sure as hell are responsible for how we handle it. You can’t move forward into the life you want, if you keep allowing your excuses to be roadblocks. It’s time to start bulldozing them, working past your fears, doubts, and insecurities to become the absolutely amazing person you always meant to be!

The reality is, you are the only one standing between where you are now, and where you want to be. So, get out of your own way, and start chasing after the life you want.
